John Wallace Tidaback, known to many as “Jack,” passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on November 30, 2024, at his daughter’s home in Mooresville, N.C. Born on August 14, 1934, in Newark, N.J., Jack was the beloved son of the late Wallace and Eileen Tidaback and cherished brother to Helene Davis.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Forsythe, and niece, Leigh Davis.
Jack’s family was his greatest joy, but he also had a passion for reminiscing and was an avid fan of the NJ Devils. He enjoyed sharing stories about his childhood and working at his father’s lumberyard. A proud Army veteran, Jack delighted in showing his visitors his Army scrapbook, where he was honored as a “Blue Nose” for his time spent on an LCM in the Arctic Circle. His contributions were recognized by The American Legion Post 86 in Cornelius, N.C., with a certificate of honor. Jack dedicated over 30 years of his career to NJ Bell, which later became Verizon, before retiring. His commitment and hard work were greatly valued by his colleagues and the company. In retirement, he enjoyed cruising the Caribbean and the Rhine. For his 80th birthday, he was honorary captain as he took the helm of the Lake Norman Catawba Queen. Above all, Jack will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He leaves behind a lasting legacy cherished by his wife of 66 years, Marilyn; daughters, Terri Vilagos and her husband Joe of Mooresville, N.C., and Gabrielle Bohon of Parsippany, N.J.; grandchildren, Kenny Vilagos and his wife Emma, Holly Vilagos, Anastasia Bohon, and Liliana Bohon; as well as nine nieces and nephews and their children.
A Celebration of Life service will be held by the family at a later date. The family extends their sincere appreciation to the caring and compassionate Home Health and Hospice teams of Atlantic Visiting Nurses and Via HealthPartners, Davidson, N.C., and Dr. Terrence Pugh. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the aforementioned hospice agencies.
