Latimer Breck Alexander III, 94, of Statesville, N.C., passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Gordon Hospice House.

Breck was born on July 23, 1929, in Baltimore, Md., before relocating to Statesville in 1938 along with his mother, Gladys Cook Alexander, and his younger sister Lenora. He was a graduate of Statesville Senior High School Class of 1948, received a B.A. degree from Catawba College and went on to earn his master’s degree at Appalachian State University. On June 23, 1956, he married the late Margaret Smith Alexander, who passed away on December 27, 2013.

Breck was an active and faithful member of Wesley Memorial UMC, where he was a charter member and was awarded the Laity Service Award. He enjoyed an extensive teaching career and in 1961 became the principal of N.B. Mills Elementary School and proudly served in that position for thirty-seven years. Breck showed great care and dedication to all his students and faculty. His school eventually became known as the cleanest school in the system. He loved his family deeply, his lifelong career in education, and spending as much time as possible at the beach.

In addition to his parents and wife of 57 years, Breck was preceded in death by his sister, Lenora A. Reavis.

Those left to cherish his memory include his three children, Latimer Breck Alexander IV (Robin) of High Point, Cheryl A. Matthews (Ron) of Statesville, and Phillip Forrest Alexander (Bindy) of Huntersville; eight grandchildren, Laura Flack (Michael), Latimer Alexander V (Mary Lea), David Alexander (Brianna), Kate Teel (Graham), Coleman Maglić (Dino), Kathleen Forehand (John), Matthew Alexander (Sydney), and Caroline Alexander (fiancé, Reid Jamil); and nine great grandchildren, Lucy Flack, Alex Flack, Charlie Flack, Emerson Teel, Sloan Teel, Chandler Forehand, Caleb Forehand, Forrest Alexander and Clai Maglić; and caregiver, Bonnie Dalton.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Wesley Memorial UMC with Rev. Gervase Hitch officiating. The family will visit with friends following the service at the Statesville Country Club between 2 and 4 p.m. A private family burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery prior to the service at 12 noon.
