Mary “Nelle” Broome Mitchum died on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, N.C.

Nelle was born on December 11, 1936, in Marion, N.C., to the late Lloyd Broome and Louise McCoy Broome. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vonley Edward Mitchum; a son-in-law, Carlton Wilkerson; a grandson, Matthew Wilkerson; her cousin’s husband, Rev. David Chapman of the Salvation Army.

Nelle was the postmaster for the Turnersburg Post Office. After retiring, she worked for Lake Norman Realty. She was a member of Mt. Sinai Methodist Church for over 40 years. She loved the church and singing in the choir. She enjoyed gospel music, her cats, and doing crossword and word search puzzles.

Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Yvonne Mitchum and Denise M. Wilkerson; a grandson, Michael Wilkerson; two brothers, Ray Broome (and wife Millie), and Jerry Broome (and wife Robbin); cousins, Shirley Chapman, Kenny and Bobbie Briscoe, and Judy Parker; and special friends, Pat McIntosh, Diann Eller, and Minnie Safley. She also leaves behind her loving church family and friends.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Mt. Sinai EMC with the Rev. Dr. Rick Stackhouse officiating. The family will greet friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service.
