Mary Kathryn Williams Sloop of Mount Ulla, N.C. passed away on Monday, November 11, 2024, at the age of 98, surrounded by her children.
Born in Cleveland, N.C., on July 22, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Addie Ruth Weaver Williams and John Justice Williams.
She was a graduate of Cleveland High School Class of 1944. She attended Phifer Junior College for two years and then graduated from Women’s College (now UNCG). She began teaching at Mount Ulla School in 1947. She finished her teaching career at China Grove Junior High in 1982. Later, she became a substitute mail carrier for eleven years at Mount Ulla Post Office.
Mrs. Sloop was a member of Back Creek Presbyterian Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years and was a member of the Catherine Barr Andrews Circle.
Along with her parents, preceding her in death are her husband, Phil Jamison Sloop, whom she married December 21, 1949, and her brothers, Justice, Charles, and Bruce Williams.
Those left to cherish her memory are daughter, Ruth Sloop, and son, Labe Sloop (Mary), of Mount Ulla; brother, Robert C. Williams (Vicki) of Churchville, Md.; grandson, Philip Sloop (Lindsay) of Mount Ulla, and granddaughters, Jenny Sloop Johnson (Andrew) of Raleigh, N.C., and Kathryn Sloop of Wendell, N.C.; great grandchildren, Bridger and Porter Johnson of Raleigh, and Beau, John, and Isabel Sloop of Mount Ulla. She had many nieces and nephews, their spouses and children, whom she loved dearly as well.
The family would like to express deep gratitude to her caregivers, Angie Link, Tosha Palmer, Mildred Phifer, Margaret Adams, and Sheila Rousseau.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville.
Funeral and burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2024, at Back Creek Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bill Thrailkill and Rev. Dr. Olin Whitener officiating.
