Patricia “Pat” Ann Devlin Weidig passed away peacefully in her sleep after living a full life of almost 84 years on March 14, 2024. Pat was born on May 16, 1940, in Bronx, N.Y., to the late Hugh James Devlin and Elizabeth Ann (McIntyre) Devlin.
Patricia was survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Hans F. Weidig Jr. She was a devoted mother of Hans F. Weidig III (Evelyn), Susan “Suzi” E. Quinn (Brian), Roberta Jo Browne (Peter), and Michael T. Weidig (Michelle). She was a loving Grandma to 10 grandchildren, Hans F. IV (Katrina), Andrew E., and Patrick H. Weidig of Baltimore, Md.; Brian “Buddy” J. Quinn Jr. of North Plains, Ore.; James P. (JP) Quinn of Fairfield, Conn.; Maggie E. Quinn of Denver, Colo.; Ryan P. and Henry T. Browne of Mooresville, N.C.; Lauren Stevens (John) and Abigail “Abby” Weidig of Jessup, Ga.; and in the last three years, she joyfully welcomed two great-grandchildren, Johnny and Johanne. Pat was also predeceased by her loving brother Hugh Francis Devlin (Lucia) and sister Ella Elizabeth Murphy (Robert), and parents Hugh James Devlin Sr. and Elizabeth Ann McIntyre Devlin of New York, N.Y.
Patty Ann was a stunning auburn-haired beauty who was fun, frequently sassy, sometimes serious, lover of life, with a great sense of humor (often dry) who also performed acts of charity in secret. She enjoyed swimming, tennis, and bowling in her younger years, and she continued swimming and boating well into her later years. Pat grew up in the Bronx, N.Y., and graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel in White Plains, N.Y. She and Hans married on September 26, 1959. After marrying Hans, they lived in Westchester County, N.Y., and Stamford, Conn., while raising their family. Next, it was onto Southbury, Conn., and Hans eventually retired. They continued to enjoy their retirement when they made their move to Wirtz, Va. (Smith Mountain Lake) for 20 years followed by Mooresville, N.C. (Lake Norman). Before marrying Hans, she worked as a key punch operator in IBM payroll of the AT&T longlines. Then, for about the next 20-plus years, she worked as a nurse, teacher, driver, coach, hockey equipment manager, cheerleader in the stands and auditoriums, counselor to her four children as well as several corporate administrative temp positions in town. Pat and Hans took in Pat’s mother Elizabeth to live with them around 1966 and Pat cared for her for about 20 years until her passing. Her sacrifice and unconditional love for her mother is what her children and others witnessed; we all knew her as an amazingly devoted daughter. She later returned to the workforce full time as a receptionist and office manager for a law firm in New Canaan, Conn.
In addition to supporting voter registration events and being an active member of the Republican Women’s Club, Pat partnered with her husband, a life-long Knight of Columbus, in his many events and charitable activities in their churches and communities.
Patricia volunteered and served at many events and ministries at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Stamford, Conn., while raising and caring for her family. While retired to Wirtz, Va., and Smith Mountain Lake, Patricia continued this dedication and service at Resurrection Church in Moneta, Va., as a Eucharistic Minister, in charitable fundraising events and anything related to Right To Life, Sanctity of Life, including education and fundraising.
She was devoted to the Eucharist and the Sacrifice of the Mass. Patty Ann always had a strong devotion to St. Therese of Lisieux. St. Therese was known for “her “Little Way” of allowing God to work through her life has become a guiding light for the faithful.” Mom was a great example of this.
While Pat loved the outdoors (when the weather cooperated), she was well-known by many friends as an accomplished card player, winning several bridge tournaments over the years. She was an avid player of many games requiring skill and wit; she was a sharp cookie.
Yet not only a great player, but she was also very much a great teacher to the weaker players she came across. Her quick wit and warm smile will be missed by all who knew her. She made friends everywhere she went, even at the nursing home in her final months. Pat was always ready to visit the casino in Connecticut, West Virginia or anywhere in her path, most especially enjoyed with her daughter Suzi Quinn.
Pat loved the lake! First, it was Candlewood when she was young with her Mom and again with her husband and children. Pat and Hans took their family to Lake George, N.Y., for many, many wonderful summer vacations providing endless joyful memories we cherish. In 2001, they moved to Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia where they quickly found precious friends and were lucky to have some family close by as well. Pat and Hans loved SML. Next, Pat and Hans relocated in 2020 to Mooresville, N.C., to live with their daughter Roberta where they continued to enjoy lake life and family, music and fond times that fill our hearts.
She and Hans loved to dance – often the showstoppers at any wedding. Later in life and into retirement, she and Hans enjoyed time with their family, including their wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren. She has blessed us with so many memories and even though the last few years have been challenging, we were blessed to have the time we did with her, loving her every day. To know her final act was to kiss her husband is a true testament to the love she had for him. Theirs was a love affair that will never end.
