Patricia Greene Honeycutt, 88, of Statesville, N.C., passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and loved ones at Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Thursday, February 1, 2024.
Pat was born on June 13, 1935, in Asheville, N.C., to the late Byron Greene and Rowena Ray Greene. She attended Asheville’s Lee Edwards High School and after graduation attended Brevard College, where she met her husband, the late Dr. Wallace Honeycutt. After completing college at Brevard, Pat went on to graduate from Women’s College in Greensboro, which later became UNC Greensboro. After graduation Pat and Wally were married and Pat worked in the lab at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill. In 1964, Pat and Wally moved to Statesville, where Wally practiced dentistry and the two raised their family.
Pat was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church for nearly 60 years. She loved her church and could be found most every Sunday in the left side of the annex. Pat volunteered in the church office for over a decade. Along with her good friend, the late Billie Gray Lassiter, Pat delivered meals for the Meals on Wheels program for many years. She also tutored children in the Statesville School System, and was a member of the Gay Blades Garden Club, a Bridge Club and a Sorority. To her children, she was Mom or Mama, and to her nine grandchildren she was “Gammy.” One of her many talents was cooking for the family, and she was well known in many homes in the Piedmont as the creator of her own version of sourdough bread that became known as “Gammy Bread.” Pat made Gammy Bread for her friends and family, and during the Holiday season it became a cherished gift.
Those left to cherish Pat’s memory include her children, Stephany Templeton (Tom) of Charlotte, Whit Honeycutt (Julie) of Statesville, Kristin Shields (Randy) of Winston-Salem and Matt Honeycutt (Elizabeth) of Winston-Salem. Pat’s grandchildren are Brevard Templeton, Meredith Templeton, Ashley Virgil (Jacob), Worth Honeycutt (Sara Cabe), Clay Honeycutt, Catherine Grice, Lauren Grice, Wallace Honeycutt, Daniel Honeycutt and a great granddaughter, Jamie Virgil. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Williams Atkins (Sally).
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 11, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Broad Street UMC with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Reverend Sonny Reavis and Reverend Dr. Don Haynes will be officiating. The family will visit with friends one hour prior to the service from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broad Street UMC 315 W Broad Street, Statesville, NC 28677 or to Meals on Wheels, in care of the Iredell Senior Center, 344 E Front Street, Statesville, NC 28677.
