Rev. Robert “Bob” Sherer, 93, of Troutman, N.C., passed away on Friday, September 6, 2024, at his home.

Rev. Sherer was born on March 17, 1931, in Sharon, S.C., at home to the late William Thomas Sherer Sr. and Jean Phillips Sherer. He graduated from Sharon High School and Erskine College. Rev. Sherer continued his education in graduate study of history at the University of South Carolina. He proceeded to Erskine Seminary to receive his divinity degree.

Rev. Sherer’s 62 years of pastoral service began in 1957 and concluded on June 23, 2019. He served several churches: Sandy Plains ARP Church, Unity ARP Church, New Perth ARP Church and Stony Point Church. He began his service in Iredell County in October 1962 and preached his last sermons at Stony Point and New Amity ARP.

On May 31, 1957, Robert married the love of his life, Sara Jane Earle Sherer, who passed away on October 15, 2021.

Rev. Sherer had several passions in life: faith, teaching, God’s word, family, history, sports, a good story, a good joke, writing, and love of his heritage in the farm and family. He loved taking time to listen, taking time to share a story or knowledge or his brilliant wit.

Rev. Sherer found a place to show these loves through community service being very active in his community. The Town of Troutman honored him with Citizen of the Year award in 2011. For many years he was very active in the Lion’s Club, promoting all their charity work for the sight impaired. He served at different times in various officer roles. He took great joy in being the fundraiser auctioneer.

Rev. Sherer’s love of sports began early with baseball and going to games with his father and brothers. He was involved with baseball and softball most of his life. Rev. Sherer loved telling stories from each, especially playing softball in college.

The service of youth was very important to Rev Sherer. He served the community’s youth through coaching Babe Ruth and Little League baseball. His teams won many championships. He was very involved with church softball for the most time in Troutman. He played, coached and was at times commissioner of the league. When he crossed those white lines Rev. Sherer was famously known as “The Rev.”

The joy of sports and friendship drew him to golf. He had many precious memories of time on the links with his friends. He always had a group, over time moving from the youngest to the oldest. They played every week. He enjoyed trips to Pinehurst, trips to North Myrtle Beach and The Erskine Open.

Rev. Sherer enjoyed trips to Bonckarken, sightseeing trips to the mountains finding good food along the way. He enjoyed dinner theatre trips and trips to the State Fair to see pigs, cows and tractors.

Rev. Sherer loved time with his family. He loved gathering all around the table for good food, stories laughter and a dish of his homemade ice cream.

Over the years he enjoyed playing in the backyard with his children, grandchildren and great granchild. Rev. Sherer took great joy and pride in watching granddaughters play soccer, son play basketball and tennis, daughter play piano. He took joy and pride in coaching his son in baseball. He loved telling stories about those days.

His love of stories led him to write his books, “Bob’s Pen I ” and “Bob’s Pen II.” He loved taking images in his head and crafting them into words.

Those left to honor his memory are his daughter, Sara Lynn Sherer; his son Robert Blane Sherer; granddaughters, Amber Sherer and Celeste Sherer Farmand (Christopher); numerous nieces and nephews, and brothers-in-law and sister-in-law.
