Stephen Alexander Johnson, 84, of Statesville, N.C., passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024. Born in Duval County, Fla., on February 3, 1940, he was the husband of Martha Combs Johnson and the son of the late Horace Lester and Ruby Cornelia Cox Johnson. He was a veteran of the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

He was a faithful member of Covenant ARP Church in Statesville and was self-employed as an electrician. He and Martha loved to travel and had visited all fifty states and all seven continents. Stephen loved fishing and ministering through various mission projects, such as Habitat for Humanity, Bethel Colony, as well as building churches in West Virginia.

Stephen is survived by his wife of 65 years, Martha Johnson; one daughter, Jennifer (Benny) Townsend; and two sons, Mark (Karen) Johnson and Jon (Ronda) Johnson. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Tonya (Ian) Taylor and Kayla Townsend; two grandsons, Ethan (Sarah) Johnson and Benjamin Townsend; and four great grandchildren, Griffin and Claire Taylor and Gunner and Sawyer Church.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by an aunt and uncle, Peter and Blanche Johnson.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 11 a.m. in the veteran’s section of Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Roger Hensley will officiate. Full military honors will be accorded.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in Stephen’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
