William Robert Inscore Sr., 94, of Statesville, N.C., died Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Iredell Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Wilkes County on May 12, 1930, to the late Gordon Inscore
and Clina Geneva Shew Inscore.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Inscore; a sister, Virginia Dare Edwards; and a grandson, Robert Joshua Shirl Inscore.

Robert was a carpenter and brick mason, laying brick for over 60 years. A master of his trade, he laid his last brick at the age of 90. He always enjoyed coming in from work and tending his garden, impressive grapevines, feeding his cows, chickens and guineas, but farming brought him true joy when it was time to share fruits of his labor with family and friends. When he took his dogs hunting, some would get excited for the rabbit or squirrel pie that would be cooked to perfection and placed on the table. He could cook the best eggs you’ve ever tasted and his pound cake was superior to others, by far. Robert was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed watching them play. He served his country in the U.S. Army and received a Purple Heart from an injury endured while fighting the war in Korea. He had been a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church for many years.

When Robert was just a young boy he went to see a newborn baby. Her name was Peggy Lee Johnson. Eighteen years later he went home to get her, took her straight to the preacher’s home and they were married in the barn. They have shared 69 years together. She says they never fussed, which may be true because the grandchildren figured out he turned off his hearing aids if it got “too hot in the kitchen.”

As a father, he supported his sons in their activities. He traveled many miles to watch Ted play sports and went many places to see and hear Joey play music.

He was proud of, respected, and loved the men his two sons have grown to be.

He was also deeply devoted to his grandchildren, who he adored. It is not possible to love family more than Robert loved his. From his children to nieces and nephews, and a few friends like family, he held them all close to his heart.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Peggy Johnson Inscore, Ted Inscore (Jill), Joey Inscore, five grandchildren, Mykel Myers (Josh), Amie Gregorio (Pedro), Jasmyn Lowe, Branson Inscore, Mac Inscore, thirteen great-grandchildren, Cru Myers, Echo Myers, Valentina Fox, Joseph Fox, Caleb Inscore, Isiaah Gregorio, Gavino Gregorio, Nathalia Gregorio, Gabriel Gregorio, Isaac Gregorio, Giovanni Gregorio, Ivanna Gregorio, Mateo Gregorio, and one great-great-granddaughter, Gaia Mitchell.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, May 24, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Wilkesboro with full military rites. The family will visit with friends Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Nicholson Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Purple Heart Homes, 775 Washington Ave., Statesville, NC 28677, or to Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 11635 Statesville Road, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

Nicholson Funeral Home is honored to serve the Inscore family.
