Alfred Jurney Jones, affectionately known as “Al,” passed away on February 12, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on August 21, 1941, in Harmony, N.C., he was the son of Paul Campbell Jones and Swannie Lee Jurney Jones, who preceded him in death.

Al dedicated his life to education and athletics, shaping the lives of countless students and athletes. In 1966, he moved to Mooresville, where he continued his 38-year career as a teacher and coach at Mooresville Junior High School. His passion for sports and mentorship led him to coach High School Baseball, Junior High Baseball, Junior High Track, Junior High Football and Junior High Basketball for 12 years. He also spent a decade coaching high school basketball, where he was named Coach of the Year in two different conferences and led his teams to conference championships in 1980 and 1987.

Beyond coaching, Al served as the Director of Transportation for Mooresville Schools for eight years before concluding his career as the principal of Park View Elementary. His dedication to education and leadership was recognized when he was named the 1999 Principal of the Year. His impact on students, athletes, teachers, and the community was profound, and his legacy continues to inspire.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Al loved Mooresville High School Basketball and was a devoted fan of Duke Basketball.

In addition to his dedication to education, Al had a deep love for the Mooresville community. He served as the Ward 3 Commissioner on the Town Board for six years, followed by six years as the Mayor of Mooresville. His commitment to public service and his passion for the town were evident in all he did for the community.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward P. Jones and David F. Jones; and his sisters, Paulette J. Driver and Violet J. Weisner.

Al is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Karol Jones; his daughters, Allison Long (Derwin) and Jenny Love (Chans); and his beloved grandchildren, Hannah Jiménez (Aldo), Jesse Ann Long, Jurney Weatherman, and Collin Weatherman. He is also survived by his step-grandson, Scout Love. Al was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Carson Weatherman and Lilia Jiménez, who brought him immense joy.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Cavin-Cook Heritage House. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, February 22, at 11 a.m. at Broad Street Methodist Church in Mooresville. Following the service, there will be another visitation at Union Grove United Methodist Church in Union Grove on Saturday, February 22, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mooresville Area Bible Teachers Association (MABTA), P.O. Box 1091, Mooresville, NC 28115; Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County; or Broad Street Methodist Church in Mooresville.

Al will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
