Betty Stroud, 93, of Statesville, N.C., passed away on Monday, January 13, 2025, at her residence. Born in Statesville, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Bill and Mabel Winecoff.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Stroud; her sisters and brothers-in laws, Hilda (Bobby) Cook and Ruth (Clint) Lapish; son, Gary Stroud; son-in-law, Robert Harris; and great-grandson-in-law, Cameron Ayers.
Betty worked as an Administrative Assistant throughout her life, ending her career by retiring from Thomasville Furniture. After retirement and in between babysitting the great-grandchildren, Betty and Amos were finally able to do some traveling. They especially enjoyed camping in the mountains, but did travel to Alaska and Hawaii.
Betty’s true calling in life was as a caretaker. From her children to her great-grandchildren, she could always be counted on as someone to provide care and love. Her love for her family was shown through home-cooked meals, which often included corn from the summer garden, her canned green beans, sweet potato or pecan pies or cranberry salad. Her cabinets, refrigerators and freezers were always overflowing with the family’s favorite snacks. The great-grandchildren were never disappointed when there was an urge for an oatmeal crème pie, freezer pop or Yoo-Hoo. Many hours were spent laughing with the entire family on the deck with Betty as the ultimate hostess. Everyone had a properly wiped seat and an offer of sweet tea or a soft drink from the outside refrigerator. Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all have memories of games of hide and seek that ended with Betty’s fingers tickling them until they cried from laughing.
Betty’s devotion to her family extends past this life. It was her greatest desire to see each of her family members come to know the Lord Jesus Christ. As a member of Diamond Hill Baptist Church for over eighty years, she sang in the choir, taught second grade Sunday School and served as the church secretary. She served alongside “Famous Amos” as they faithfully served the church for years in preparing food for the annual Pig Pickin.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Donna Harris and Larry Stroud of Statesville. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Scott (Audra) Harris, David Harris, Timothy (April) Stroud, and Kristi (David) McCann; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley Ayers, Drew Harris, Trent Harris, Parker Harris, Kasie (Zachary) McCann, Kyle (Brooke) McCann, and Courtney Stroud; and two great-great-grandchildren, Wylder Ayers and Rhett McCann. She also leaves behind several treasured nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Diamond Hill Baptist Church in Statesville on Friday, January 17, 2025, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Services will be held immediately after with the Reverend Larry Holleman and Reverend Jeff Luxon officiating. Entombment will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorial donations to be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County, online at https://www.hoic.org/ or mail to 2347 Simonton Road Statesville, NC 28625.
