Evelyn Melzetta Hall Heaggans, 92, of Troutman, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, in Statesville, N.C. She was born on March 15, 1932, in Iredell County to the late Fred Douglas Hall and the late Lottie Summers Hall.
She was a faithful member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, N.C. She loved teaching Sunday School and was also a part of the Senior and Cathedral Choir, Presbyterian Women, and the Christian Education Committee. She also worked at Blanton and Moore for many years making wooden chairs.
Evelyn had a beautiful heart and a genuine soul. She was always a giving person who loved her entire family. She was great at giving unconditional love to each and every person she encountered.
She enjoyed family gatherings, and visiting family and friends, especially those in need, and going to the mountains with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling to Maryland to visit her special nephew Gary and his wife Irene and sweet sister Mildred, as well as them coming down to visit her on many occasions.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, James Hall and Robert Hall; sisters, Florence Robena Jarvis, Lucille Morrison, Frances Houston, Mae Helen Templeton, Geneva Clark, her husband of 34 years, John Alexander Heaggans, in 2011; her daughter, Revallie Louise Heaggans Freeman, in 2015; and a special sister-in-law, Onevva Heaggans, in 2021.
She is survived by her sister, Mildred Tenor of Bowie, Md.; grandchildren, Krista Cousar (Thomas Cousar, deceased as of 2022) of Troutman, Kevin Freeman – KC (Tina Freeman) of Kannapolis, Mario Freeman (Lakisha Freeman) of Troutman, and Ciji Freeman Scott (Dominique Scott) of Statesville; great grandchildren, Stefanie Rossi, Anesia Cherry, Anaya Cherry, Amaree Freeman, Erikah Freeman, Lia Freeman, Alayna Freeman, Caivin Scott, Naimar Scott, and Jaylyn Bailey; special nieces, Doris E. Green, and Andris Morrison; special nephew, Gary Houston; special great nephew, Sanchez Jarvis; and special friend, Pastor Dr. Ethel Revis.
Evelyn and Dr. Ethel were such good friends that they called each other “Sissy”. In a special message Dr. Ethel writes, “Sissy loved talking, teaching, and living out the Word of God. She shared His love with family, friends, and the community. Her greatest joy was sharing with the marginalized persons of society God’s love for them and rejoicing when they accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior.”
A service celebrating Evelyn’s life will be held on Monday, February 3, 2025, at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 12 until 1 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m., with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
