Gary Luckey Sherrill, 74, of Mooresville, N.C., joined his Lord and Savior in heaven on January 31, 2025. He was the youngest of nine children born to the late Wilbur Duke and Marjorie Ella Luckey Sherrill and was raised in Lincoln County’s Lowesville community.
Gary graduated from East Lincoln High School and then spent most of his career in the construction industry operating heavy equipment such as excavators, dump trucks, and cranes (including a project on one of the largest cranes in the world). In his personal time, he enjoyed hunting trips and golf outings with brothers, in-laws and friends. He loved horses and dogs throughout his life, especially the years with his beloved yorkshire terrier named Bear. He looked forward to large family gatherings and savoring country ham biscuits! Above all, he loved and cherished his only child Angie, his pride and joy. She loved being a “daddy’s girl” and they shared a special relationship, made even stronger during the past year of his health challenges.
In addition to daughter Angie and her husband Eric Stroupe, he is survived by brothers, Donald Sherrill (Barbara) of Pawleys Island S.C., and Steve Sherrill (Judy) of Hickory; sisters, Barbara Wright and Patricia Nixon, both of Mooresville; Cheryl Jackson and sister-in-law Barbara Marshall Sherrill, both of Charlotte; along with a close-knit lineage of 16 nieces/nephews and their spouses, 24 great-nieces/nephews and their spouses, four great-great-nieces/nephew; Angie’s mother, Donna Gionet of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; as well as many extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Billy Sherrill (& Peggy), and Wade Sherrill; sister Carey Meacham (& Bernie); and brothers-in-law Ben Wright, Carl Nixon, and Phillip Jackson.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be planned in the future.
