Glyn Ray Powell, 91, of Troutman, N.C., passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025. He was born on May 17, 1933, in Fulton, Ky., to the late JT and Minnie Powell. Mr. Powell was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Mooresville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Winkie Powell; son Dan Powell; and sister Melinda Hatler.
Outgoing by nature, Glyn never met a stranger. He was always willing to help others. He was very active with the Marine Corps League of Iredell County and supportive of the South Iredell High School MCJROTC program. He loved laughing, telling stories and entertaining with his small but effective repertoire of “magic” tricks. His family was his pride and joy. He loved spending time supporting them at events and just hanging out. He was an accomplished athlete, excelling in several sports, playing basketball, golf and tennis into his mid-70s. He was always up for an adventure – reluctant at times in recent years, but always so happy he participated afterwards. He will forever be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, Papa, Boppa, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend.
After serving in the United States Marine Corps, Glyn graduated from what is now Louisiana Tech University with a degree in mathematics. After graduating, he literally went from steam as a railroad engine fireman to the cutting edge of technology. At the Arnold Research Organization, he analyzed wind tunnel testing results for various high-performance aircraft and space vehicles. Later, in the 1960s, he joined the emerging field of business computing, where he worked in various roles until his “retirement”.
He leaves a lasting legacy to be cherished by his survivors, including sons, David Powell and wife Bonnie, and Doug Powell; daughter Wendy Vaughn and husband Scott; grandchildren Morgan Powell, Dani Sullivan and husband Pat, Dylan Powell, Alex Vaughn and wife Jessica, and Chase Powell; great grandchildren Peyton and Emma Sullivan; brothers-in law Jacque Voegeli and wife Jean, and Dan Voegeli and wife Alice; nephews Jay and Charlie Voegeli; nieces Belinda Alexander, Emily Wilson, Jill Crittendon and Tori Connor, along with many friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Heritage House on Sunday, February 16, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Dr. David Rockness officiating. The family will receive friends following the service from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Heritage House.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to MCL Iredell County, PO Box 727, Troutman, NC 28166.
