Kathleen Moffat Kitchens, affectionately known as Kathie, passed away on April 24, 2025, following a brave and relentless four-year journey with metastatic recurrent Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck.

Kathie was born on April 18, 1958, in Portland, Maine, to George Fredrick and Anna Louise. She spent most of her young life in Binghamton, N.Y., and graduated from Maine-Endwell High School in 1977 where she was a cheerleader and voted “Class Clown” as her senior superlative.

After high school Kathie began a career in the Airline Industry and was based in Rhode Island. In the early 1980s, she moved to North Carolina, where she started building a life in the South. She married her first husband, Eddie Wheeler, in 1984, and they were blessed with two daughters, Kyndra Rae in 1985 and Kaylee Marie in 1993. During that time, Kathie worked as a waitress and was a very devoted and involved mother. In 1995 Kathie and her family moved to Flint, Mich. Kathie re-entered the Airline Industry while in Flint and work for US Airways Express. In Early 1999, after a divorce, Kathie transferred with US Airways to Charlotte and moved back to Mooresville with her daughters. In 1999, while working at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Kathie met a pilot, Kurt Kitchens, in the “smoke room” and after years of dating the two married in 2004. Over the next 20 plus years they built a life full of travel, adventures, laughter, love, and devotion.

Kathie was truly the life of the party. Anyone who knew her knew how deeply she loved, and how effortlessly she made people laugh. Her vibrant spirit, infectious laughter, and ability to light up any room were just a few of the gifts she shared so freely and will stay with us forever. Her love for her family and friends was unconditional and limitless. She was everyone’s biggest cheerleader and supporter. She never met a stranger and had an uncanny ability to make and keep connections with people over long periods of time. She set the bar for what friendship should look like and had many long-lasting friendships. Kathie had the biggest green thumb and really enjoyed growing indoor house plants. She loved boating on Lake Norman, laying in the sun by the pool, shopping, watching movies, playing words with friends, going to Cherokee to gamble, going on cruises, listening to 70s music, celebrating every holiday, and spending quality time with her favorite people. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, joy and togetherness.

Kathie is cherished and survived by her devoted husband, Kurt Kitchens; beloved daughters, Kyndra Heck and Kaylee Tucker; caring sons-in-law, Matt Heck and Adam Tucker; adored grandchildren, Piper Heck, Porter Heck, Lyla Tucker, and baby girl Tucker due in late June; and treasured pet, Lucy Kitchens. She is also survived by her brother, George “Kevin” Moffat and his wife Donna Moffat and their four children and growing families; brother, Brian Moffat and his wife Debbie Moffat; sister, Christine Rowton and her two sons and families; brother-in-law, Greg Kitchens and his two daughters; mother-in-law, Glenda Wheeler; sister-in-law, Donice Blanton and her five children.
