On Thursday, January 16, 2025, Lynn Martin Meadows passed away at home in Mooresville, N.C. He was 82 years young.
Lynn was born in Rockingham County on July 27,1942. He was the last of nine children born to the late Cleadus and Clarice Meadows. He lived in Elkton, Va., his entire life until November of 2017, when he moved to North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by both parents; his brother, Cleadus Jr.; sisters, Doris Wright, Glenna Alger, Lottie Brown, and Janet Baker; and son-in-law, Bradley Carpenter.
Lynn graduated from Elkton High School with the Class of 1960. He played quarterback on the football team known as the 13-Man Squad as well as finishing his high school baseball career with a .614 batting average and MVP honors.
In 1964, Lynn and Patricia (Pence) were married. They raised three daughters, Lori Bisso (Huntersville, N.C.) Amy Carpenter (Mt. Crawford, Va.) and Holly Simmers (Mooresville, N.C.). Their family continued to grow with the addition of sons-in-law, Bradley Carpenter, Clark Simmers, and Robert Todd Grubb; and four cherished granddaughters, Allison Carpenter, Taylor Carpenter, Carrington Simmers and Chamberlyn Simmers.
Lynn is survived by his devoted family, which also includes two brothers, Ernest and Milton Meadows; one sister, Virginia McCallister; and many nieces and nephews.
As baseball was forever his passion, Lynn continued to play for Rockingham County for the next 20 years. He earned the nickname “Mighty Mite” for his play-hard or go-home attitude. He treasured his time with the county leagues, stating the fellowship and people he met during that time would remain lifelong friends. Many of those friends, along with Lynn, were inducted into the Rockingham County Baseball League Hall of Fame in 2012.
In the late 70’s Lynn moved from baseball to softball – fast pitch, slow pitch – wherever there was a game until finally retiring completely. He coached many of his daughters Little League softball teams as well as umpiring both baseball and softball at the high school level.
Lynn retired as a supervisor from the Reynolds/Alcoa plant in Grottoes, Va., after 37 years of service. Not one to ever slow down, he immediately accepted a position with the Town of Elkton as the Eastern Rockingham Parks & Recreation director/special events planner. This position led to the enhancements of many ball fields and youth activities for Elkton. In 1983, Lynn approached the idea of securing land for a new ball field in town. It took three years for the Stonewall Memorial Park to happen, but the town of Elkton finally had a home field with lights in 1985. This ongoing love of youth sports and care of the hometown where he was born and raised a family brought him the coveted Distinguished Service Award from the State of Virginia.
Lynn Meadows never met a stranger, was willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need and left this life happy, loved and secure wrapped in God’s arms.
