Marvin “Mutt” Henry Waugh Sr., 93, of Catawba, N.C., passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 6, 2025, at the Sherrills Ford Hospice House.
Mutt was born on May 16, 1931, to the late Cecil Henry Waugh and Lula Dagenhart Waugh. On May 24, 1952 he married the love of his life, Carolyn McGuinn Waugh, who survives. Together they shared a love of almost 73 years.
In addition to his parents, Mutt was preceded in death by siblings Kenny Waugh Sr., Shirley Huffman, and Martha Jane Day.
Mutt was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Those left to cherish his memory include two sons, Marvin Henry Waugh Jr. (Trudy) and Jimmy Waugh (Beth); four grandchildren, Jason Waugh (Adrienne), Greg Waugh (Sara), Christopher Waugh (Bailey); and Emily Waugh Gray (Matthew); and five great-grandchildren, Madison Waugh, Morgan Waugh, Maecyn Waugh, Kate Waugh and Luke Waugh. He is also survived by siblings Bryant Waugh and Mary Jean Summers. Mutt was also blessed with numerous nieces and nephews and his supportive McGuinn family and neighbors.
An extremely hard worker, Mutt enjoyed a career at NL Fasteners. He was an avid fisherman and gardener, and he loved all sports, especially baseball. His love of baseball was passed down to his family and he attended as many games as he could. He also enjoyed going on antique hunts with his sons.
Mutt was one of a kind and was an inspiration to many. A regular at the Adrian L. Shuford YMCA, he lifted weights and walked every morning up until one month before his passing. When he wasn’t working out, he was offering advice on farming and life in general or encouraging everyone to drink his famous okra juice recipe. The family would like to thank the staff and Mutt’s friends at the YMCA for their love and support.
Family was extremely important to Mutt. He enjoyed family get-togethers and playing cards. He had a way of making everyone feel important, even serenading family members over the phone the morning of their birthday. Mutt will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the staff of Carolina Caring for their compassionate care of Mutt and the family.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Marvin Methodist Church in Stony Point, where he was a lifetime member, on Monday, April 28, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jerry Rogers and Rev. Jeff Carson officiating. The family will greet friends after the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Adrian L. Shuford YMCA (1104 Conover Blvd. E, Conover), Carolina Caring (3975 Robinson Road, Newton), or Marvin Methodist Church (671 Marvin Church Court, Stony Point).
