Norma Jean Dearman, a beloved mother, grandmother, teacher, friend and volunteer, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, at Brookdale Memory Care in Statesville, N.C.

Born on April 10, 1933, in Stony Point, Alexander County, she was the cherished daughter of the late Jake and Willard Combs Lackey.

Norma Jean’s life was a testament to the power of education, service and compassion. A proud graduate of Stony Point High School, Catawba College and Appalachian State University, she devoted 29 years to teaching history in the Iredell-Statesville Schools. Her passion for the past and her love of storytelling inspired generations of students to appreciate history’s lessons and its enduring impact on the present.

A woman of deep faith and a Wesley Memorial United Church member, Norma Jean embodied the community spirit. For more than 25 years, she served as a dedicated “Pink Lady” volunteer at Iredell Memorial Hospital, holding multiple terms as president of the volunteer program. Her commitment to service extended far beyond the hospital walls, as she continually gave of her time and talents to those in need.

Norma Jean found joy in life’s simple yet profound pleasures: the embrace of her family, especially her grandsons, whom she adored; the beauty of history and literature; the creativity of needlework; and fulfillment of volunteering. Her grace, intellect, and kind heart left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In March 1952, she married the love of her life, Paul Dearman. They shared 42 years of marriage until his passing in October of 1994.

Norma Jean is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul (Chuck) and Debbie Dearman of Maggie Valley, N.C.; and her grandsons, Zachary Dearman of Virginia Beach, Va., and Joshua (Alison) Dearman of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sisters, Nancy (Joe) Lay and Pat Pope, both of Statesville, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Brookdale Assisted Living and Memory Care and the compassionate team at Trellis Support Care for their dedication and kindness.

A memorial graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery on April 12, 2025, to celebrate Norma Jean’s remarkable life and to honor her memory.
