Richard Howard Childers, 78, born on Friday, November 1, 1946, in Alexander County, N.C., passed away peacefully at his home in Alexander County on Monday, January 27, 2025. He lived a remarkable life, cherished by family and friends.

For over 40 years, Richard devoted his career to Broyhill Furniture, where he earned the respect of his colleagues and made lasting contributions to the company. He was not just diligent in his work; he was passionate about his interests, particularly in the world of automobiles. Richard enjoyed NASCAR, hot rods, racing, and showing cars and trucks. His enthusiasm for vehicles extended to cruise-ins and anything that revolved around cars, especially his treasured 1972 Chevy truck.

Richard was of the Baptist faith, drawing strength and comfort from his beliefs throughout his life. Above all, he exemplified a profound love for his family. His devotion is most clearly reflected in the relationships he cultivated over the years.

Richard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Hayes Childers; their sons, Billy Childers (Sandra) and Michael Childers (Wendy); and his grandchildren, Gage Childers, Zane Childers, Marah Sipe, and Macie Sipe.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Mary Jo Bumgarner Childers; his daughter, Donna Michelle Childers; and his sister, Margaret Gwaltney (Rev. Jerry Gwaltney).

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Service located at 193 NC-16, Taylorsville, NC, 28681. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 4 p.m, in the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel. Rev. Cliff Gwaltney will officiate. Inurnment will be with the family.

The family will accept flowers, or donations may be made to the Humane Society or Hurricane Helene Relief Fund of your choice.
