Steven Andrew Koontz, 39, of Statesville, N.C., passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

Born on October 13, 1985, in Iredell County, Andrew was the son of Steve Warren Koontz and Jeri Mills Koontz. A graduate of Statesville High School and Appalachian State University, Andrew had a successful career, which included many years as a staff accountant in John Barnard’s office and, more recently, as the Assistant Finance Director for the City of Statesville. Though he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic, Andrew’s true joy in life came from his family, his friends, and his community.

On October 24, 2009, Andrew married his best friend and high school sweetheart, Sara Dunham Koontz, who survives him. Their marriage was a partnership rooted in love, respect, and a shared commitment to raising their two sons, Maddox Wade and Weston James. Andrew’s greatest pride was in being a father—his love for Maddox and Weston was immeasurable. Whether coaching their sports teams over the years or simply spending time together, Andrew was fully present and actively involved in his children’s lives.

Andrew’s warmth and kindness were evident to everyone he met. He had a happy heart that shone through in everything he did. His infectious smile, caring nature, and ability to make others feel truly seen and valued made him someone you could always count on. Those who knew him fondly remember his laid-back style—no matter the season or weather, Andrew was often found in his trademark shorts and flip-flops, a reminder of his easygoing spirit.

Throughout his life, Andrew had a unique way of lifting others up. Whether in his role as a son, husband, big brother, father, or friend, he had an innate ability to offer guidance, encouragement, and support in quiet but powerful ways. His belief in those he loved, and in others, was a source of comfort and strength, and he was always there to cheer people on, offering a steady presence and a listening ear.

Andrew was also a devoted member of his community. He served on the board of directors at the American Renaissance School. He and Sara enjoyed volunteering in children’s church at Beulah Baptist Church, where they had found their church family. He was always ready to give back and make a difference in the lives of those around him.

He is survived by his parents, Steve and Jeri Koontz; his brother, Matthew Rosemond Koontz (Sarah); his father-in-law, Jon Dunham; his mother-in-law, Ellen Dunham; his brother-in-law, Jason Dunham (Hannah); and his nephews, Jason Dunham Jr. and Kingston Dunham. He also leaves behind his cherished uncles and aunts, including Ralph Koontz (Patti), Bryan Koontz (Terri), Phil Mills (Janis), Tracy Dolan (Gene), Paige McCarter (Keith), and from Sara’s side, Jim Wade (Mary), Steve Robbins (Kathie), and Jean Dunham; as well as numerous cousins.

The Koontz family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time, a true testament to Andrew and the company he kept. Andrew’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, through the laughter he brought and the love he gave so freely.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, February 2, at 2 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church with Brian Burgess, whom Andrew thought so highly of, officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 1, from 6 until 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the 529 College Fund established for Maddox and Weston’s future. Checks can be made payable to Sara Koontz, 130 Fawnwood Drive, Statesville, NC 28625.

Troutman Funeral Home is honored to serve the Koontz family.
