It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Virgil Kenneth Cumby on January 31, 2025, at the Gordon Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family. Virgil was born on March 13, 1954, in Bluefield, W.Va., to the late Kenneth and Lois Cumby. He was the beloved husband of Ethel Faye Cumby and a devoted father, stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Virgil is survived by his son, Virgil Cumby (Lisa Cumby), and his stepdaughters, Rebecca Veros (Bobby Veros) and the late Angela Pendergrass (Walter Pendergrass). His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Mindy Nguy, Taylor Pendergrass, and Amber Pendergrass, as well as his adored great-grandchildren, Asher and Kai Brown, and Makoa Nguy. He is also remembered by his sisters, Veleda Davidson and Melissa Bunker, and joins his late sister, Durinda Kay Hamm, in eternal rest.

Throughout his life, Virgil found joy in simple pleasures. He had a passion for playing the guitar and singing, fishing by the water, and caring for his home and garden. Known for his generous spirit, love for music and willingness to help others, he taught those around him valuable lessons on integrity, hard work, and self-reliance. He loved to make people laugh, often with his well-timed pranks and playful nature. A skilled handyman, Virgil could fix anything and never backed down from a challenge.

Above all, Virgil cherished his family and the joy of Christmas celebrations. His heart of gold touched everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him, and his memory will live on through the love and lessons he imparted.

As friends and family gather to honor Virgil’s remarkable life at Rocky Hill Baptist Church, they do so reflecting upon the legacy of a man who chose to build rather than break, to heal rather than harm, to laugh rather than languish. With heavy hearts tempered by fond memories, they celebrate the chapters of a life lived fully—a life that now belongs to the ages yet continues to resonate in the stories and souls of those he touched.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 9, from 1 until 2 p.m., with the funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Gray Little will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
