Alice Westbrook Fowler died December 29, 2024, at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, N.C.

She was born in Statesville, N.C., on April 28,1937, the daughter of the late Alice White Fowler and John Cooper Fowler. She attended local schools, graduating from Statesville High School in 1955. She continued her education at St. Mary’s Junior College in Raleigh and graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with degrees in English and Journalism.

Following her graduation, she taught English and Journalism in Danville, Va., before going to New York to seek a career in journalism. She worked for Gourmet Magazine and several trade publications, eventually taking a longtime position as a proofreader for the prestigious law firm, Cravath, Swaine, and Moore. While living in New York, Westbrook was a member of The Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Upon retirement, Westbrook returned to Statesville, where she lived for a while with her sister and rejoined First Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of The Colonial Dames.

Westbrook was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Martha Cooper Fowler. She is survived by her brother, John Clealand Fowler of Lumber Bridge, N.C., and a number of nieces and nephews.

At Westbrook’s request, there will be no formal services.
